December 2011:

After a week of anticipation and speculation Saturday evening, December the 3rd, saw the first 2011 NRHA Futurity entry, "Lil Joe Cash" and Andrea Fappani blast into the coliseum in Oklahoma City. Their score of 227.5 (75.8) mirrored their near perfect run. We had been lucky enough to see Andrea school "Lil Joe Cash" from 2:00 to 3:00 am on the night of our arrival and it was amazing to see this horse perform as well in the show pen as when he was being schooled, a feat not often achieved. We then sat back and waited for one of the next 30 runs to eclipse this great performance...it didn't happen. Fappani riding "Spook Off Sparks" and Arno Honstetter (who works for Fappani) riding "Show Me The Buckles" came within 2 points, marking 225 1/2. It will be great to review all 31 runs when the DVD arrives as it was hard to compare the first runs with the latter. The payout was huge with "Lil Joe Cash" earning $150,000.00 and the horses tied for 2nd and 3rd taking home a cool $119,133.00 apiece...31st place paid out $9,970.00. Top 10 horses were ridden by; 1st Fappani: 2nd/3rd Fappani and Hostettler: 4th McQuay: 5th Schmersal: 6th Flarida: 7th/8th Flarida/Salgado: 9th Crawford and 10th Canadian Dean Brown.

On Thursday evening we were privileged to watch the $100,000.00 "World Shootout". It was spectacular with the greatest Reining horses and riders in the world competing. The class was won by "Tinker With Guns" (trained and shown by Randy Paul) and Andrea Fappani with a score of 231.5 (77.1), followed by Shawn Flarida riding "Whiskey N Diamonds who marked a 229.5 (76.5) and Duane Latimer (a Canadian) riding "Custom Cash Advance" with a 228.5 (76.1). This class certainly disproved the myth that Reining horses are a throw away commodity...they were so amazing and we were so lucky to have witnessed their performance.

We attended several sales that didn't seem to reflect the current World economy with a "Whimpy's Little Step" selling to Xtera Quarter Horses of Mexico for $200,000.00! Brood mares were also a hot commodity which should reflect a positive future growth in the Reining industry. If you review the online sale results from these sales you will recognize several buyer names.

The "Big Three" Western Shops (Tenners, Shepplers and Langston's) and show venders did their usual booming business. It would be interesting to know the count on boot and jean sales generated by the NRHA Futurity each year.

We also had full intentions of attending the "Affiliate Summit" but ended up stuck in our first ever real life traffic jam on the number 44 Freeway. It provided time to visit during the first hour but as the second hour wore on pit stops and hunger began to dominate the conversation:) Hopefully other members of the PGRHA Affiliate were able to attend and can give a report on what's new and exciting for 2012.

Already looking forward to 2012 as the Futurity is the one event that you can attend that is guaranteed to generate the same excitement and anticipated fulfillment year after year!
